Polio is a potentially fatal and infectious viral disease leaves a person a crippled. There is no cure for polio, but the safe and preventive measures like vaccination or immunization can save a child from polio. Polio vaccine is given multiple times as the child grows. Therefore, the strategy to eradicate polio is preventing infection by prior vaccinating or immunizing every child until transmission of the virus is stopped and the world is made polio-free.
There are two types of polio vaccine available to prevent the infection:
OPV (Oral Polio Vaccine): It is given as a birth dose orally and later three primary doses are given at 6, 10 & 14th week and one booster dose between 16-24 months of age.
Injectable Polio Vaccine (IPV): It is an additional dose given along with the 3rd dose of DPT under UIP – universal immunization programme.
Rotary International established World Polio Day to commemorate the birth of Jonas Salk, the man who led the first team to develop a polio vaccine. With the help of this inactivated poliovirus vaccine and oral poliovirus vaccine developed by Albert Sabin, led to the establishment of the GPEI – Global Polio Eradication Initiative in 1988. GPEI had reduced polio by 99% worldwide. So every year World Polio Day is observed on 24th October to create awareness and to celebrate the remarkable success achieved in eradicating polio.
Still, somewhere in the world polio exits, let’s do our part to eradicate polio 100% from our planet. We Sai Siva Children’s Hospital as part of social responsibility educating our patients at the hospital about the importance of vaccination for preventing polio.
